AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE
A pig slaughter (known in Czech and Slovak as a “zabíjačka”) happens every year at an old farm in Osoblaha — the only day when everyone is together as a family, spending time eating, drinking, and stuffing sausages. But this year is different. Šupina is already drunk, the butcher hides the fact his cartridges are damp, Lucie is depressed after her marital breakup, young Dušík runs away, and Grampa can’t bring himself to tell Karel that this slaughter will be their last.
Faithfully replicating the tough cuts of a family feast, Czech writer-director Adam Martinec presents a thoughtful and authentic debut film, one which premiered in the Official Competition at this year’s Karlovy Vary Film Festival.
